CHANDRA CAPTURES IMAGES OF supernova REMNANTS

New images released from the Chandra X-ray observatory show detailed

images of remnants of three supernova explosions: G21.5-0.9,

PSR 0540-69, and E0102-72. The closest is only 16,000 light years

away, and shows incredible detail of the expanding cloud of gas and dust.

TROPICAL STORY DELAYS ATLAS ROCKET LAUNCH

Just after Hurricane Floyd passed through the area, bad weather

is continuing to plague Cape Canaveral with Tropical Storm Harvey.

This second storm has further delayed the launch of an Atlas 2AS

rocket carrying an EchoStar 5 TV satellite. The launch has been

tentatively rescheduled for September 22nd.

MARS CLIMATE ORBITER NEARS FINAL DESTINATION

Launched from Earth nine months ago, the Mars Climate Orbiter will

arrive at the Red planet on Thursday. Its first challenge will be

to perform a tricky orbit insertion burn which will break the

spacecraft into a steady orbit around the planet.

THREE NEW MOONS DISCOVERED AROUND URANUS

Using a powerful telescope in Hawaii, Astronomers have discovered

three new moons circling Uranus, bringing the planet's total

to 21 - the most in the solar system. These moons escaped discovery

until now because of their irregular orbits, either widely elliptical

or off the planet's plane of equator.

JAPANESE ROCKET LAUNCH DELAYED UNTIL NOVEMBER

It looks like the launch of a Japanese H-2 rocket carrying the

multifunctional transport satellite, or MTSAT, will be delayed

again - for the fourth time. This further delay is difficult for

the Japanese space agency, which has had more than its share of

delays and technical difficulties.

NASA PANEL TO REVIEW SHUTTLE MAINTENANCE

After the recent wire damage scare, NASA has put together a special

panel to investigate and report on the agency's Space Shuttle maintenance

practices. Their preliminary findings are expected for October.
