NEUTRINO DETECTOR INSTALLED UNDER THE OCEAN
Researchers from the University of Sheffield are working to install
a very special telescope at the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea. Even
stranger, it's pointed straight down. Called the Antares telescope,
it's designed to detect neutrinos, and it uses the Earth as a barrier
to stop interference from cosmic rays.
DARK matter MYSTERIES UNCOVERED
Scientists believe they're closer to understanding Weakly Interactive
Massive Particles (WIMPs) - which is believed to compose 90% of the
universe's "dark matter". Using sensitive equipment in Europe's
deepest salt mine, researchers have discovered "intriguing" signals
which could be the first sign of WIMPs.
LOCKHEED TO INCREASE Titan 4 SAFETY
An independent panel commissioned by Lockheed Martin to investigate
the safety records of the Titan 4 described many areas that the company
needs improvements. The panel found problems in accountability,
quality, subcontract/supplier management and cost emphasis. Lockheed's
CEO stated that he plans to implement the panel's recommendations.
