SUN'S corona COULD BE HOT BECAUSE OF FRICTION
Recent observations made by NASA's Transition Region and Coronal
Explorer (TRACE) spacecraft have shown that the sun's outer
atmosphere, called the corona, causes friction on gas that
erupts from the surface - friction hundreds of millions of
times more powerful than previously expected. This friction
could be the reason the corona is 100 times hotter than the
surface of the sun.
IO'S ATMOSPHERE A SPARKLING AURORAL light SHOW
Images of Io taken by Galileo while the Moon passed through
Jupiter's shadow have shown the moon's atmosphere produces colourful
auroral emissions - similar to the northern lights on Earth. It's
suspected that the aurorae are produced by a combination of powerful
electric currents and volcanic plumes.
NASA BUDGET CUTS DELAYED
The House has decided to postpone a vote until September which could
deliver a set of devastating cuts to NASA's budget. If the vote goes
through, NASA's budget would be cut by almost $1 billion, which NASA
administrator Dan Goldin feels would devastate the agency.
