PROSPECTOR CRASH SOMEWHAT DISAPPOINTING

Lunar Prospector served its final mission well enough - it crashed

into the Moon near the southern pole Saturday morning - but the

results of the experiment are still inconclusive. Astronomers were

hoping to see a cloud of dust and ice rising from the collision which

would provide evidence of water on the moon.

CHANDRA BOOSTS TO HIGHER ORBIT

In the first of five orbital maneuvers it will make, the Chandra

X-Ray observatory boosted its orbit so that the high point would

take it nearly 68,000 kms away from the Earth (1/3 of the distance

to the moon). Controllers have been systematically activating the

observatory's systems with great success.

COLUMBIA FUEL LEAK CAUSE FOUND

It turns out a loose pin from one of the Space Shuttle Columbia's

engines possibly caused the fuel leak shortly after launch last week.

Gold-plated, and only 1-inch long, the pin was knocked from its tube

from the force of the engines firing, where it punched a hole in

the engine nozzle.

NASA'S BUDGETS MARGINALLY RESTORED

After a day's budget hearings, the House Appropriations Committee

has decided to restore some of NASA's slashed budget - $400 million.

This still leaves total budget cuts, however, of $1 billion.
